EVANGELISM 101: Lesson 2 – Preparing for Evangelism

The GREAT PREREQUISITE:

Every person who does evangelism must be sure of himself/herself to be a true believer of Christ. He/she should have the Life of Christ in him/her.

Physical Preparation:

  1. As much as possible, free from sickness or any physical discomfort.
  2. Personal hygiene – presentable clothing and good-smelling.
  3. Have enough energy. Evangelism could be physically-tiring. It is best that fasting (in preparation for evangelism) should be done before the actual evangelism.

Mental Preparation:

  1. Know the cultural and academic background of the target community for evangelism. This will help you to adjust your methodology and the use of words to avoid being unnecessarily offensive.
  2. If the target community has a different language from you, study their language.
  3. Review the Gospel. It is best to memorize Salvation Scriptures by heart.
  4. Be familiar with other topics that confront people in their everyday lives: healing, money, burdens, forgiveness, wisdom, acceptance, love, etc. It is best to have ready Scriptures for such topics.

Spiritual Preparation:

  1. Nothing beats the power of prayer. The power of the Holy Spirit is released thru prayers. Fasting is best done before the actual evangelism.
  2. Make yourself a holy and consecrated vessel. “A Holy Minister is an awesome weapon in the Hand of God.” – Robert McChyne.

Essential Parts of the Message of Evangelism (Good News, Gospel)

  1. The Universal Love of God for all Mankind (John 3:16).
  2. The Universal Sinfulness of Man (Rom. 3:10-12).
  3. Jesus (and having faith in Him) is the only way to be saved (John 3:16; 14:6; Acts 4:12).
  4. Good Works cannot earn salvation (Eph. 2:8-9).
  5. Reality of Heaven (Eternal Life in Jesus – 1 John 5:11) and Hell (Eternal Separation from God – Rev. 21:8) (Rev. 20 and 21).
  6. Assurance of Salvation and Sonship by having faith in Jesus (John 1:12).
