EVANGELISM 101: Lesson 3 – The Act of Evangelism

Ethics of Evangelism:

  1. Going by partner (by two’s) is the best number for evangelism (Luke 10:1-17). Going by three is still good, but going by four or more is intimidating, especially if the majority of the group are males.
  2. Be polite and humble. Do not insist the sharing of the Gospel if they are not willing to listen or not yet ready.
  3. Avoid debate. We do not win souls by debating, but by sharing the Gospel.
  4. Avoid doing evangelism during meal times or siesta (nap). This may cause unnecessary burden for the target homes to prepare extra food for you, or cut short their rest.

Introducing the Gospel:

  1. Do not forget your warm greetings and telling your names.
  2. Be frank about your purpose. Tell them that you want to share the Bible and Jesus and that it is for free and will only consume around 10-15 minutes.
  3. You may start the conversation by asking questions or by giving true and relevant stories.

How to handle Opposition and Debates:

  1. Always remember, it is not your purpose to win an argument but to share Jesus and the Gospel.
  2. Stick to the message of the Gospel. You should be the one who controls the conversation.
  3. Remain calm and humble, avoid being aggressive in answering questions. Just answer questions that relate to the Gospel.
  4. If you feel that they just want to win an argument, stop the conversation and just offer to give them a prayer.
  5. If you feel that they are asking some good questions that you are not yet ready to answer, tell them that you would like to answer their question on some other day.

Ending the Evangelism:

  1. Ask for their personal prayer requests and pray for those items.
  2. Ask them if they are willing to be visited for a regular (like a weekly) Bible Study.
  3. Do not forget to say your thank you before leaving.

EVANGELISM 101: Lesson 2 – Preparing for Evangelism

The GREAT PREREQUISITE:

Every person who does evangelism must be sure of himself/herself to be a true believer of Christ. He/she should have the Life of Christ in him/her.

Physical Preparation:

  1. As much as possible, free from sickness or any physical discomfort.
  2. Personal hygiene – presentable clothing and good-smelling.
  3. Have enough energy. Evangelism could be physically-tiring. It is best that fasting (in preparation for evangelism) should be done before the actual evangelism.

Mental Preparation:

  1. Know the cultural and academic background of the target community for evangelism. This will help you to adjust your methodology and the use of words to avoid being unnecessarily offensive.
  2. If the target community has a different language from you, study their language.
  3. Review the Gospel. It is best to memorize Salvation Scriptures by heart.
  4. Be familiar with other topics that confront people in their everyday lives: healing, money, burdens, forgiveness, wisdom, acceptance, love, etc. It is best to have ready Scriptures for such topics.

Spiritual Preparation:

  1. Nothing beats the power of prayer. The power of the Holy Spirit is released thru prayers. Fasting is best done before the actual evangelism.
  2. Make yourself a holy and consecrated vessel. “A Holy Minister is an awesome weapon in the Hand of God.” – Robert McChyne.

Essential Parts of the Message of Evangelism (Good News, Gospel)

  1. The Universal Love of God for all Mankind (John 3:16).
  2. The Universal Sinfulness of Man (Rom. 3:10-12).
  3. Jesus (and having faith in Him) is the only way to be saved (John 3:16; 14:6; Acts 4:12).
  4. Good Works cannot earn salvation (Eph. 2:8-9).
  5. Reality of Heaven (Eternal Life in Jesus – 1 John 5:11) and Hell (Eternal Separation from God – Rev. 21:8) (Rev. 20 and 21).
  6. Assurance of Salvation and Sonship by having faith in Jesus (John 1:12).

EVANGELISM 101: Lesson 1 – Biblical Foundations of Evangelism

Understanding of End Times Bible Prophecy leads us to:

  1. Pursuit of Personal Holiness
  2. A Lifestyle of Daily Evangelism

Definition and Description of Evangelism

It comes from the same Greek word for gospel (euangelion) and means, literally, “gospeling.” When we evangelize, we are “gospeling” — we are spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

  1. Witnessing for Jesus (Mark 5:1-20),
  2. Winning Souls for Jesus (Jude 1:23),
  3. The First Step towards Discipleship (should be followed by Discipleship)

Why every Christian should Practice and Pursue Evangelism?

  1. It is the Command of Jesus (Matthew 28:18-20). It is not just for the original Apostles, but for every Christian because ‘all the world’ (all nations, end of the Earth) has not yet been reached with the Gospel (Acts 1:7-8). The command flows to every Christian Generation, to every Christian alive.
  2. Because the World is Broken and is in the Darkness (Isaiah 60:1-3; 2 Tim. 3:1-5 – Last Days).  We are the Light of the World (Matt. 5:14-16) because the Word of God which we carry, is Light (Psa. 119:105; 2 Pet. 1:19), along with our testimony.
  3. Faith comes by Hearing, for the Salvation of the Lost (Rom. 10:12-15).
  4. Evangelism is a Major Key to Christian Growth. It should be a part of our Christian Lifestyle. It gives strength to the soul; it gives food to our soul (John 4:34).

The Divine Task of Evangelism / Notes on Evangelism

  1. It is for every Christian, not just for any particular group or organization, or Church.
  2. It is an ongoing Divine Task that will continue until Jesus comes back (Acts 1:8).
  3. Its Power comes from the Holy Spirit, and not from human wisdom and good exhortation (Acts 1:7-8).
  4. Not everyone who hears the Gospel will be saved (Romans 10:15-16).
